148 Fallen Officers Reported in 2018, 12 in Texas

January 9th marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association would like to take the time to honor the fallen officers of the past year.

According to the Officer Down Memorial page, we lost a total of 148 officers in 2018. That is a small but concerning 6% rise from 2017 in which we lost 139 officers total.

Out of the 148, most officers fell due to gunfire at 52 with 26 of them killed in an automobile crash. Another outrageous statistic we found was the number of officers we continue to lose to 9/11 related illnesses. We lost a total of 14 officers due to 9/11 related illnesses which occurred now 18 years ago.

Also out of the 148, 10 were female officers. The average age of a fallen officer was 41 and the average tour of duty was 12 years. 12 of these fallen officers were killed in Texas.
